The prototype of the modern Arbor Day was born in the United States in the 19th century. In 1872, agronomist J. Sterling Morton proposed the establishment of a special tree-planting festival to improve the desolate ecology of the plains in Nebraska. On April 10 of that year, the state held the first Arbor Day, during which more than 1 million trees were planted (Pinghu Municipal Government). Since then, this concept has gradually spread worldwide, and various countries have set Arbor Day on different dates in accordance with their own climates and national conditions.
II. China's Arbor Day: A Century of Evolution, Set on March 12
1. Modern Beginning (1915)
With the initiative of Sun Yat-sen and the promotion of foresters such as Ling Daoyang, the Beiyang government stipulated in July 1915 that the Qingming Festival would be China's first statutory Arbor Day, which is in line with the farming season and traditional customs of spring tree planting.
2. Date Change (1928)
Sun Yat-sen passed away on March 12, 1925. In 1928, to commemorate his contributions to forestry and environmental protection, the Nationalist Government changed Arbor Day to March 12, and in 1930, it established the "Afforestation Campaign Publicity Week" (Jiangsu Provincial Department of Natural Resources).
3. Statutory Establishment (1979 to present)
In February 1979, the Standing Committee of the Fifth National People's Congress formally resolved to designate March 12 as the national Arbor Day. In 1981, the nationwide voluntary tree-planting campaign was launched, stipulating that eligible citizens should plant 3-5 trees voluntarily every year (National Forestry and Grassland Administration). The newly revised "Forest Law" in 2020 once again clarified that March 12 is the statutory Arbor Day.
III. Core Significance
Arbor Day has gradually evolved from its initial purpose of ecological restoration into an important global festival for promoting greening, environmental protection, and sustainable development. It is both a guardianship of nature and a commitment to a green future.
